Today I am sharing with you an easy and quick quiche crust recipe. After several years of trial, and several adjustments here is the perfect recipe for a tasty and crunchy crust. It is so easy to make and so healthy that you will never buy another one from the store again. It requires only basic ingredients that you have in your fridge, without any unhealthy additive!
Originally the pie crust was not intended to be eaten. it served as a container or marker to protect the vegetables and large pieces of meat that cooked in front of the fireplaces. Later, it was mainly used to accommodate the preparations of salty cream mixtures. Today this preparation consisting of flour, soft butter, salt and water serves as the basis for both savory and sweet preparations. A great classic, essential for filling molds and making quiches, pies, tarts…
This pie crust recipe can be used for any quiche recipe, pie recipe, tart recipe. By adding sugar to the recipe, this pie crust recipe can also be used for sweet pie, like apple pie, raspberry pie etc...
Wheat flour is the main ingredient to prepare the dough. It can be any all purpose wheat flour. If you want to make an even more healthy crust for your quiche, you can use whole wheat flour.
Salt in the dough preparation will add flavor, and will enhance the taste of the other ingredients.
Butter will link all the ingredients of the recipe together and will give the nice crust to the dough.
Water will also act as a binder.
You can add any herb, cheese, spice to your dough to give it a unique taste. It can also enhance and balance the taste of the toppings you will choose.
With this easy recipe, preparing the crust for your quiche will be a piece of cake :). It can even be a great activity you can do with your kids. They will love putting their hands in and mix all the ingredients together.
In less than 10 minutes the dough will be ready to be rolled out!
In a mixing bowl, add the flour, the salt, the butter cut into small cubes (and at room temperature) and any extra optional ingredients such as oregano, cheese etc... and crumble all the ingredients together. Then progressively add the water and knead it all together. The dough should detach from the bowl. If it is not the case you can add some more wheat. If on the contrary the dough is breaking, add a little bit more water. Form a nice and soft ball. The dough is ready for the next step
Note: You can optionally, leave the dough to rest in the fridge for at least 20 minutes. It will add some more crust to the dough. I never leave my dough to rest and the dough is delicious!
Now that the dough for the pie crust is ready, it is time to sprinkle some flour on the counter and on a rolling pin. Then gently start to flatten the dough with the approximate size of your tart pan. Try to flatten it as evenly as possible to a thickness of approximately 3 to 5 mm (no need to be precise, it i just to give an idea ;). It does not matter if the shape is not completely round, you will be able to readjust it once in the quiche pan.
Once rolled out, roll the dough a bit on the rolling pin, it will be easier to transfer the dough on the quiche pan.
Now, line the pie plate by pressing the dough on the the edge all around the quiche pan.
Once lined up, you can cut the extra pieces of dough if needed, to make it as neat as possible. To do so, simply press the dough on the edge of the quiche pan.
